Can Nuclear Bombs be used for Space Probe Propulsion?

With their mive Energy, I wonder if its possible to accelerate unmanned space probes to gigantic velocities (a good % of speed of light) with a mushroom cloud or some sort of nuclear explosive propellant. Or is it just farting fuel the most powerful way known for changing velocity?
