Why does Paul use so much athletic imagery in his letters?

The Greco/Roman sporting events were popular in those days. It was something people could relate to. It would be similar to comparing salvation to the Superbowl as the ultimate prize in modern times, or a gold medal at the Olympics. The Olympics would be a more fitting ogy.
