What is the origin of demonyms ending in -i?

I know that most Middle Eastern and South Asian demonyms end in "-i" (such as Iraqi, Nepali, Azeri, Afghani, Pakistani, Farsi, etc.) Is there a source for this? Is it from any particular language?
