How do we ask for money in lieu of wedding gifts?

I would p the word on through mouth, including the reasoning, so everyone knows, no way would I put that on a wedding invitation. Just about everyone gives money as a wedding gift anyway, mostly gifts are given at the shower. I didn't put anything on my invitation referring to gifts and I only got 3 gifts all the rest money.
